Finally got a SpaceNavigator – and you should too!

It’s taken long enough, but I finally got a 3DConnexionSpaceNavigator” for Google Earth.  All I can say is “wow”.  This thing is great!

The best way I can describe it is that it makes Google Earth fun again – like it was back when I first discovered it.  I’m finding myself flying around all of the same places I looked at when I first discovered GE (various houses I’ve lived in, etc), simply because it’s so fun just to fly.

Frank Taylor over at the Google Earth Blog did a nice write-up of it back in November that gives more detail about it.  Go read his review of it and then go buy one for yourself!

Just wondering, about 3d input device have you heard of the Sandio GameO? how do you feel about that in comparison with the space navigator?

I’ve not heard of that one. I love the SpaceNavigator (as you can tell), but I can’t compare the two. Hopefully someone else can do that.

As an owner of a SpaceNavigator for 1.5 days, I don’t think anything that isn’t a single 6DOF knob can beat it (such as the 3 2DOF sticks of the Sandio mouse). Also, being a separate device that requires forces of a few hundred grams to hit its limits, I think the SpaceNavigator allows for more precision; a similar force on a mouse would interfere with your mousing badly! Those few hundred grams can be nearly enough to pick it up though, when you pull all the way up.

You should probably decide based on whether you want to use the keyboard, mouse, and 6DOF device at the same time. In GE you won’t have to, but in a supported game where you might need to do anything quickly the Sandio might be a better choice.
