Solothurn 1830 shows the city of Solothurn, Switzerland around 1830. The model is based on a real historic 3D cardboard model scale 1:500 in the museum "Blumenstein" in Solothurn. The city of Marvao, Portugal has just had their 3D models added to the default layer, and they are incredible. Use this placemark to fly over there, then turn on 3D buildings in the layers section. Wow!

These models are specifically for the new free Google Earth 4 (beta) and utilize texture mapping to add a great deal of realism to the scene. Texture maps are photos applied to 3D models so you can add great detail without slowing down the 3D rendering in the application. Done right, the models blend in with the surrounding aerial photography and look excellent viewed at all angles.
This is Chiflucka quarter, in Lom, Bulgaria, in 3D. It is an exact copy of the real neighbourhood, at this exact location, although the scale of the buildings is about 1 m. larger than they actually are.
I used SketchUp 5 and it took me less than 6 hours to do it.
