On August 4, 1991, the MTS Oceanous sunk off the South Africa's eastern coast. The Oceanos was said to be in a state of neglect, with loose hull plates, return valves stripped for repair parts after a recent trip, and a 10-centimetre (3.9 in) hole in the "watertight" bulkhead between the generator and sewage tank.
