In July 24, 2001 a LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam) suicide squad attacked Bandaranaike International Airport. In three waves, a highly trained and heavily armed 14-man squad penetrated the 800-acre high security complex and destroyed or damaged 26 commercial and military aircraft. The attack is among the biggest operations so far launched by the LTTE.

For the Day Star Walkway, Bill FitzGibbons integrated the tail section and wings of a BAC 1-11 airplane that were donated by Dee Howard Aircraft Maintenance. The sculpted wings serve as a gateway and signifier to help direct parking patrons to and from the new parking garage and Terminal 2. The tail section has been incorporated as part of the walkway canopy.
