In 1942, the site of the Atlantic Airport was reused by the Navy to construct Charlestown NAAS, a satellite airfield for Quonset Point NAS. Charlestown was used to train night fighter squadrons, and also was the home of the Navy Air Navigation Project, which developed & tested navigation aids & traffic control systems.
|The airfield was built to a specification known as a class "A" standard operational airfield, this involved 3 intersecting runways 60 degrees to each other all 150 feet wide, two of these being 4400 feet long and the main runway was 6400 feet long, the perimeter track was 50 feet wide and would circumscribe the entire flying area and was 3.25 miles in length. ||06/25/2006||403|
