Soby brown coal mine

Soby brown coal mine

This is the danish lignite or brown coal mine of Soby opened 1939 and lasted till 1970. The mine was 4000 acres big and over 2000 people worked here.

Today it's a museum with housings, a shop but also the equipment used to dig the coal.

The mine was also used as movie location for the danish Morten Korch movie "Vagabonderne paa Bakkegaarden" from 1958.

Ivigtut former cryolite mine

Ivigtut was founded as a mining town. In 1806, cryolite was found in the area, and mining started in 1865. The mineral deposits were exhausted by 1987, and the town lost its economic base. Now, the town of Ivigtut is abandoned, and the only settlement of the municipality is the naval base Kangilinnguit (Grønnedal) east of Ivigtut which is to stay.
