Description: The range was originally set up in 1966 by the European Space Research Organization (ESRO) - one of the precursors of ESA. The first rocket was launched there on 20 November 1967.
Currently, ESRANGE includes seven permanent pads able to launch most types of sounding rockets and high-altitude balloons.
Esrange's latitude of 67 degrees north puts it just within the Arctic Circle - excellent for the investigation of polar phenomena from the aurora borealis to strange noctilucent clouds and ozone depletion.
