Description: Sand Creek Massacre,(also known as the Chivington Massacre) was an infamous incident where 150 Cheyenne and Arapaho were killed. Before dawn on November 29, 1864, more than 700 soldiers, mostly volunteer Colorado State militia, attacked a Native American encampment on Sandy Creek in south-eastern Colorado. Even though Chief Black Kettle waved an American and white flag, the solders killed old men, women, children, and babies, while most of the men of the village were away hunting. |
