Description: This is the oldest surviving giant obelisk. It was erected in 1942 B.C. at the entrance of a sun god temple in Heliopolis by Sesostris I of the Twelfth Dynasty to mark the 30th year of his reign. Once part of a pair, its companion is thought to have toppled sometime in the 12th century A.D.
