Description: Plum Island Animal Disease Centre is a US Department of Agriculture (USDA) facility devoted to diagnosing and researching foreign diseases of animals.
Plum Island is the only location in the United States where bioterrorist attack disease agents can be studied. It is located 1 1/2 miles off the north-eastern end of Long Island, NY.
In late August 2005, the Department of Homeland Security announced that it would replace the Disease Centre, with a "next generation biological and agricultural defence facility" at a location yet to be determined.
