Description: Of the four volcanoes included among the archipelago that make up the Cape Verde Republic in the Atlantic Ocean off the west coast of Africa, small Fugo Island is the tallest and most active. The entire island is nothing more than a towering stratovolcano, rising 2,829 meters (9,281 feet) and topped by an 8-kilometer caldera. In 1995, after a more than 40 years of quiet, the volcano erupted, spilling lava into the caldera, where people had settled in search of good farmland. A small village was destroyed and thousands of people were forced to evacuate, many of them permanently. |
