This is the Southsea (Portsmouth) ternimal for the hovercraft service that runs between Southsea (Portsmouth & Southsea) This was the first Hovercraft passenger service in the world Founded in 1965, Hovertravel Limited is the world's longest established commercial hovercraft operator. The hovercraft, a totally new form of transport was invented in 1955 and for the major part of those years, Hovertravel has been running cross-Solent passenger services. Today it operates the most powerful amphibious diesel hovercraft - the AP1-88/100. This is capable of carrying 100 passengers across the Solent all year round. As well as the Isle of Wight service, Hovertravel supports charter operations and special services around the world for other operators. It has seen service in over 40 countries worldwide, from the Amazon Jungle to the Arctic, from the deserts of the Middle East to the islands of Australia and Papua New Guinea. Few places have been untouched by Hovertravel. The core of the business remains its cross-Solent service between Ryde on the Isle of Wight and Southsea on the mainland. Hovertravel carries around 700,000 passengers in its 18,000 crossings per year and by January 2004 more than 20 million passengers have been carried since 1965. Hovertravel are developing larger hovercraft for use on the Solent route. The next generation of hovercraft will be larger, more comfortable and quieter and it is expected to be in service by Summer 2005. Hovertravel will continue to lead the way ahead.
