Description: The northernmost of the Kuril Islands, located only 11 km southwest of the Kamchatka Peninsula's southernmost point of Cape Lopatka (visible at the extreme right of the image) and 2 km north of Paramushir (at left). Covering an area of 388 km² and with dimensions of 28 km in length (southwest to northeast) and 15 km in width, Shumshu (Остров Шумшу) rises to a height of only 189 m — making it the least elevated of the Northern islands. The low-lying terrain is studded with numerous small lakes and contains extensive areas of marshland.
