Description: A powerful typhoon pummeled southern China on Thursday, killing at least eight people and leaving 27 Vietnamese fishermen missing after their boats sank in Chinese waters.

Typhoon Chanchu — the most severe storm to strike the South China Sea region during the month of May — has killed at least 48 people in Asia, including 37 in the Philippines last weekend.
