Description: In early 1941, another interesting target was constructed southeast of Socorro. It was a scale model of the German battleship Bismarck, and was made of dirt with wooden logs for the gun turrets. This was built to train pilots from the Royal Air Force in identifying the famous battleship at night. However, the Bismarck was sunk in May 1941 — before the "adobe" Bismarck saw much use. It is still there today. |
