Description: After the death if King Christian IX in 1906 the two sisters Queen Alexandra of England and Zarina Dagmar (Maria Feodorowna) bought Hvidore north of Copenhagen as their danish residence. They restored it and a tunnel was made to the beach. Maria loved to seek amber at the beach.

Both sisters lived at Hvidore every year from september to november. 1914 when WW I began Maria stayed in Russia on the residence on the the peninsula Krim until she fled in 1917 when the russian revolution happened. First by ship to London and finally to Copenhagen in 1919.
In Copenhagen she was welcomed by King Christian X and she moved in to Hvidore again.

Here she lived until she died on october 13th. 1928.
She was buried in Roskilde Cathedral crypta after a service by the russian-orthodox church in Copenhagen.

2005 the danish and russian government aggreed a reburial in St. Petersburg next to her husband Alexander III (died 1894). On september 26th. 2006 the reburial began with a service in the cathedral. Later after a short service at the orthodox church. Then the final trip to the harbor wher the danish vessel Esbern Snare was waiting to tranport her to St. Petersburg. When Esbern Snare sailed off a Royal Salute of 3x21 was fired from Bastion Sixtus.

On september 26th. the ship arrived in St Petersburg, it was in Marias 140th. anniversary for her first arrival in St. Petersburg. Two days later she was reburied next to her husband in the Peter and Paul Cathedral. 78 years after she died and 87 years after she left russia.

Today it houses a school runned by the danish insuline producer NovoNordisk.
