Description: The Batman Bridge is the first cable-stayed bridge in Australia crossing the Tamar River in northern Tasmania. The bridge is on the Batman Highway connecting the West Tamar Highway to the East Tamar Highway.
The bridge's deck is supported by a single A-frame pylon constructed on the west bank of the Tamar river, on a solid dolerite rock base. The east bank being soft clay is not capable of supporting the bridge. A causeway carries the highway across this soft base, supported by piers built on piles into the clay.
The bridge is named after John Batman, a Launceston businessman and founder of Melbourne |
