Description: The city of Beirut has been described as the Paris of the Middle East, but as these dramatic pictures show the capital of Lebanon now resembles a post-Blitz London.
A million people – almost a quarter of the population of Lebanon – have been forced to abandon their homes with up to 1,000 people killed.
Whole city squares have been obliterated across miles of the cityscape as hundreds of bombs are dropped during Israel’s almost unremitting bombardment.
The main are of Hizbullah offices has been largely raised to the ground while the neighbouring Mousharafieh shopping district with its Christian church has also been hit.
