Description: The morning of Tuesday 25th April 1953 was dawning in Temple Drive when at 5.35am part of the roof of Clifton Hall Tunnel suddenly collapsed at a point below an old construction shaft. The sand filling the shaft poured into the tunnel, creating a chasm into which a pair of semi-detached houses Nos. 22 and 24 – were precipitated while the end wall of No. 26 also gave way. The accident tragically claimed the lives of the inhabitants of the two collapsed dwellings – Fred Potter (aged 87) and his wife Clara (73) who lived at No. 22, Sara Salt (aged 69) and her two daughters Jean Salt (28) and Emily Owen (45) from No.24.
