Description: The actual castle is from XVIth century.
Mareuil was one of four baronies of Perigord, what explains the very defensive character of the fortress. There was born the troubadour Arnaud de Mareuil. Demolished during the One hundred years war, arsoned during the religious wars, this castle was restored many times.
In the XVth, Geoffroi de Mareuil modifies the castle of his ancestors, to make it more corresponding to the taste of the moment, by decorating it with elements of the Renaissance.
It preserves however a lot of defensive elements: moats, outer walls and two cylindrical towers. Beyond the chatelet which formerly watched the access to the castle, a main building articulates in set square around a ancient keep.
A spiral staircase allows to reach the apartments of which the Room of the Council presenting a beautiful tiled floor of the XVth. Accommodated in a tower, to note also a very beautiful chapel of flamboyant Gothic style. Inside, we can admire beautiful paintings, an interesting furniture of Louis XV, Louis XVI and the Regency era, numerous souvenirs of Marshals Lannes and Berthier, as well as of Napoleon 1rst
The castle was successively fief of Mareuil, d'Anjou, d'Escars and Talleyrand-Perigord families then at last property of the Homes of Chalais. Since 1963, it is up to Lannes de Montebello.
