Description: XVIth century castle. The powerful feudal building of the XIIIth is marked by the architectural styles of various centuries : XIVth, XVth and XVIth. Built according to a plan in quadrangle, a massive keep of the XIIIth, reshaped in XVth and bristled of machicolation, a XVth hexagonal tower of staircase and an overhanging watchtower come to strengthen a facade of the XVIth inspired by the Italian
Renaissance.
We can admire windows in full round arch decorated with headbands, ledges, consoles and medallions, as well as with bays with transoms of which some are framed by small furrowed columns with capitals.
The castle welcomes a small museum of Bandiat & Tardoire valleys as well as a workshop-museum of the weaver.
In the XIVth, this castle recovered from the chatellenie of Nontron. In the XVth, it had high justice on five parishes. Bought by the municipality in 1965, the castle was restored by the villagers who obtained, in 1981, the first prize of the "Masterpieces in danger" competition.
This castle was the former fief of Montberon, Peyrusse des Cars, Moreau, Langalerie de Geraud, de Marandat and Vergers families then property of the municipality of Varaignes. |
