St Eval airfield in early 1942

Description: Like many RAF bases of the late 1930s St Eval was originally a grass field site. These proved completely unsuitable in wartime; water logging in wet weather meant that grass airfields were unusable for lengthy periods. The runways in this photo were built during the spring of 1940. The layout of the airfield is typical of the period, with one main runway roughly 1000 metres long and two shorter ones arranged in a triangular pattern. Beyond the runways is a perimeter track from which parking bays were reached; this arrangement ensured that the runways would always be clear for take-off and landing.
