Description: The hippodrome of Groenedaal was build in 1887 due to the fact that Belgian King Leopold II considered the existing hippodrome in Bosvoorde as "too small". Located in the middle of the Sonian Forest this was once
the biggest horse racing track in Belgium. Next to the current grandstand, constructed in 1985, there is the "Royal Loge" for the king and his family. A railroad track transporting visitors to the race track was
removed in 1978. In 2001 the "Société Royale d’encouragement pour l’amélioration des races de chevaux en Belgique" went bankrupt and the track was closed.
