Radio Beam Remote V2 Guidance Bunker at Roquetoire

Description: One very unique structure related to the Wizernes project is in the small French place of Roquetoire, about 8-9 km away from the small town Wizernes and southeast from St. Omer. In this fortress-like concrete structure (medium sized compared to other German works), there was established an ultramodern, ground-based, radio beam remote V2 guidance system. The system received the code name "Umspannwerk C" (transformer station C). This apparatus was conceived and built for guide-beam flight correction of the V2 rocket during launch. Thus, one can see the direct connection between the Wizernes and Roquetoire projects.

The bunker was 35 meters in length, 22 meters broad and had a height of approx 7 meters. The roof and wall thickness amounted to about 3.5 meters. The structure can only be described as very impressive. In operation, the facility could disperse the field equipment and vehicles, and quickly recall them for protection from air attacks. There were 3 entry and exit doors, plus the main entrance of the building was large enough for big trucks to enter and be completely covered, locked inside with needed equipment.

The Roquetoire Leitstrahlstellung facility was never fully operational because of the bombing and abandonment of the Wizernes site. The Leitstrahlstellung apparatus was to be adapted however, for full mobile use in Holland and Germany with the mobile V2 troops, with good results, late in the war. Roquetoire had no visible air raid defenses other than the bunker itself. Damages suffered in combat to the structure are not known, if any. In January of 1946, all materials on and within the bunker that could be removed were transported by French authorities to another location.
