Description: The famous Hagia Sofia mosque in Istanbul Turkey. It was built by Constantine the Great in the 6th century, the architects were Isidore of Miletus and Anthemius of Tralles.
Hagia Sophia is one of the greatest surviving examples of Byzantine architecture. Its central dome is 31 meters in diameter and 56 meters high. It has been damaged by earthquakes in 558, 563, 989 and 1346.
It was the seat of the patriarch of Constantinople until the muslim conquest in 1453 and has been a mosque ever since.
