Description: The Commodore of the Ottoman Navy, Kilic Ali Pasha commissioned Mimar Sinan to construct him a mosque in 1580. Appointed to head the Ottoman Navy after his victory at Inebahti, Kilic Ali Pasha was an Ottoman admiral who originated from Italy. He converted to Islam to serve under Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent (1520-1566) after he had been caputered by pirats during his youth. After his retirement, he requested Sultan Murat III to recommend him a suitable place to construct of a mosque. The Sultans reply was, You can build it on the sea-the home of the Commandore of the Navy.. Thus, he brought in tons of earth to fill in a section at the entrance of Tersane Iskelesi, one of the most important wharfs of Galata, and built his mosque here. Although the complex was originally built on the shore, today it is situated well inland due to the changes in the city's topography.
As a part of a complex consisting of a tomb, bath and a school of theology, this mosque is a smaller version of Hagia Sophia. It is not known if this similarity was the preference of Kilic Ali Pasha or Sinan. After a thorough study of Hagia Sophia, Sinan come up with a more perfect artistic and static interpretation of its plan and upper structure, which was built by Sinan when he was 90 years old, can be considered as an improved version of the Hagia Sophia architectural elements. With 16th century Iznik tiles on the niche and the exterior congregation gallery, it is a comfortably quaint mosque.
