Description: On the 9th of December, Gazprom, the Russian gas giant, officially opened Ostafyevo Airport. This is the newest in the Moscow region. Its southerly location in the Podolsk district gives it, enviably, site close to central Moscow. Taking part in the proceedings were Gazprom head,Rem Vyakirev, Gazprom-AVIA General Director, Vladimir Krasnov and various representatives from the civil aviation world, the Defence Ministry and the Moscow Region administration. Krasnov is reported to have said that construction of the airport had been decided upon by a governmental decree of 12th July 1995. The airfield had been the property of the Defence Ministry until ownership was transferred to Gaxprom on 26th August 1995. He also said that Phase 1 of the airport reconstruction had been completed with the finishing of the runway extension, which had taken it from 1510m to 2500m. Ostafyevo is now capable of handling 50 passengers an hour and will largely focus intiially at least on the provision of flight support for Gazprom's personnel.
