Description: The Farakka Barrage, constructed by India in 1974, only a few miles from Bangladesh border, is a water resource development project. The Farakka barrage is a low height dam, constructed mainly to divert water from the main channel of Ganges-Padma river that flows through Bangladesh into the Hoogly-Bhagirathi channel for irrigation services and the resuscitation of the Hoogly port in Kolkata.
