Description: Anguilla is a elongated island 26 km in length and averaging around 5 km across with an area of 93 km². It is the northernmost of the Leeward Islands, located 8 km north of Saint Martin (at bottom of image) — both of which emerge from a common submarine shelf. The island is of low relief (reaching 65 m), consisting largely of limestone formations built over ancient volcanic rocks. Its low rainfall (around 1,000 mm per year) and its poor quality soils support a patchy scrub-type vegetation.
The islands are administered as a territory of the United Kingdom.
