Planetarium of the Ibirapuera Park - São Paulo, Brazil

The Planetarium of the Ibirapuera was conceived for the comemoration of IV the Centenarian of São Paulo, in 1954, but it was only inaugurated in January of 1957. Since then, until the interdiction of the building in 1999, when it stopped to function, it took care of about 4 million visitors.

Planetariums are specials rooms where the sky and the movement of the astros can be simulated by means of projection of images in the interior of a celestial sphere. The great advantage is that the sky can be shown, with all realism, at any time of the day, any that are the meteorological conditions. The sky of today can be shown in São Paulo, as also of any last or future date, or of any another point of the globe.

In an immense region metropolitan as the Great São Paulo, the planetarium is indispensable a pedagogical tool. With effect, beyond the favorable meteorological conditions, the atmospheric and luminous pollution and the blockage of the horizon for great buildings, hinder that the sky can be observed such as it is.

Thus, the education of basic Astronomy in great urban centers cannot excuse the planetarium.
