On 27th July 1880, 328 men of the 66th (Berkshire) Regiment were killed in Maiwand, a village in Afghanistan, during the Second Afghan Campaign. The 31 ft long lion was erected in their memory. It's the largest sculpted lion and one of the largest bronze sculptures in the world.
