Google Earth Plug-in: Tower Subway - with overlay

Info Map Comments (0) Related Files

The Tower Subway's chief claim to fame is that it is the world's first tube railway, that is, an underground railway constructed in a tube rather than in a brick tunnel. It consists of an iron tube, 7 feet in diameter and about 1235 feet in length, laid some 18 feet below the bed of the Thames. It was opened for tramway traffic on the 12th April 1870, but due to mechanical failures the tram cars ceased to run on 7th December 1870 and it was then opened for foot-passengers (fare one halfpenny). This came to an end once Tower Bridge opened nearby in 1894 as this was free to cross.
