Mission #35 of the 303rd BG
Group aircraft flew in perfect formation to drop 61 1/2 tons of 500-lb. bombs on the target. The Germans made an attempt to conceal the target by the use of a smoke screen, but it proved to be ineffectual. Flak over the target at the 25,000 ft. bombing altitude was moderate and very little evasive action was necessary to avoid the bursts. Enemy air opposition, however, was heavy with 100 to 150 FW-190s, ME-109s, ME-110s, and JU-88s observed. The German fighters began their attacks as soon as the Forts hit the German coast and kept up a running fight until the ships had dropped their bombs, turned back, and were well out to sea. The 303rd BG(H) gunners had 13 enemy aircraft confirmed as destroyed, four probables, and 12 damaged. |
