Rubjerg lighthouse on the NW coast west of Hjorring was build in the years 1899-1900 and was first time lit december 27th. 1900. It was lit off on august 1st. 1968 because the light wasn't that visible anymore from sea. The sand had build a big dune at the beach after several storms since 1900.

When it was build it stood on a hill of 60 meters (196.5 feet) and 200 meters (656 feet) away from the coastline, today is it 140 meters (473 feet). The dune itself was only 3 meters high (9 feet). The lighthouse itself is 23 meters tall (75 feet).

From 1910 until 1920 a lot of sand from the surrounding dunes, in the 1950th. an attemt was made to remove as much sand as possible but without luck.

Until now a lot of storms have raged the area and the lighthouse got more and more covered. Today you can see how it looks like on the last two photos.

The last time you could walk up the stairs to the platform of the lighthouse was september 1st. 2002.

On the photos you can see the development from the years 1992, 1993, 1999, 2001, 2002 and 2005.
