20 April 1945
Major Phillips led the successful mission of 20 April against the Lusia Bridge in Northern Italy. This bridge, one of the few left standing, spanned the Adigo River and was being used by the retreating Germans.
One thousand pound RDX bombs were dropped to obtain excellent results. Flak at target, described as slight, inaccurate, and heavy, damaged one plane; save that it interfered little with the accuracy of the bombing, for the mission was scored at 91.9 percent. Direct hits were observed on abutments and approaches of the bridge, as well as the span itself. One lone NO-262, pursued by two P-51s, was seen in the area of Bologna. |
