Info Map Comments (0) Related Files

This narrow and large place, surrounded by trees (except the wood) is the former Schokland island, Netherlands.
Situated in what was an inland sea, named "Zuiderzee", in the center of the country, witch became the "IJsselmeer" in 1932, due to the construction of the 32kms long dam, named "afsluitdijk".
Due the construction dam of the polder named "Noordoostpolder" in 1942, and its draining, the Schokland island was born another time, but in what would be now, a place of farms and cities.
Schokland was a peninsula, that by the 15th century, had become an island. After the major flood of 1825, the situation became quite difficult for its inhabitants, and ,in 1859, the place was definitely evacuated, due to the sea encroachment.
The remains are still visible as a slightly elevated part in the polder.
In 1995, the former Schokland island became the first UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Netherlands.
