By Letter A is the Carrier Aquila and in middle drydock can be seen two german VIIc class submarines.
Aquila - ex Roma shown laid up at Genoa in 1945. The only Italian aircraft carrier of World War Two and converted from the passenger liner Roma. Work began in November 1941. At the time of Italy's surrender the Aquila was nearly completed but was sabotaged to prevent its use by the Germans. She was damaged in an air raid on the 16th June 1944 and on the 19th April 1945 was damaged by chariots and finally scuttled by the Germans in Genoa. Salvaged in 1946 with the view of rebuilding her but eventually scrapped 1951 - 52. |
