Google Earth Plug-in: Duck decoys in Europe

Info Map Comments (0) Related Files

A duck decoy is a device to capture wild ducks or other species of waterfowl. Formerly the birds were slaughtered and used for food. More recently they have also been used for ornithological research.

Duck decoys were invented in the Netherlands where most are even today.

In 1813 there were 264 duck decoys in the Netherlands, in 1849 252, in 1880 170 and in 1931 145. In 2010, the Netherlands had 118 remaining duck decoys in use. 22 of them are open for public to visit. The same for Albuen and Sønderho Old Decoy on the island of Fanø in Denmark, and for Kampen on the island Sylt in Germany.

The word decoy is derived from the Dutch word eendenkooi, which means "duck-cage".

In this file you can see thm in The Netherlands with 158, Belgium (4), England (25), Northern Ireland (1), Ireland (1), Denmark (7) and Germany (14).

Where images in GE are bad there are views in Bing Maps. Also plans of the decoys in England.
