|This caldera from a super volcano was formed only 3500 years ago. Aniakchak Caldera formed during an enormous explosive eruption that expelled more than 50 km3 (11.5 cubic miles) of magma. The caldera is 10 km (6.5 miles) in diameter and 500-1,000 m (1/2 mile) deep. Subsequent eruptions formed domes, cinder cones, and explosion pits on the caldera floor. |
