Turkey's first Congress of Economy held in Izmir upon instructions by Atatürk on 17th February 1923, and as a result started the new process leading to the İzmir International Fair. The warehouse of Osmanli Bankasi on the 2nd Kordon Street was chosen the congress building. Upon the success of the Exhibition of Economy, the "Nine September Local Exhibition" was organised in Mithatpasa Institute of Arts and Crafts between 4th and 25th September 1927. An exhibition entitled "The September 9 Local Products Exhibition" was first held at Gümrük Meydani (Customs Square) in Izmir, upon the proposal of the Association for the Protection of Local Products during the First Economic Congress meeting. Later the site was changed and it was held at the Mithatpasa Vocational School until 1932. In 1932 the exhibition was called the "September 9 Market" and one year later, in 1933, with the suggestion of the then Mayor of Izmir, Dr. Behcet Uz, the fair was called "Izmir Fair", and covered 33,000 square metres near the Büyük Efes Hotel. Previously only Turkish firms took part in the fair. In 1936 it took on an international status with the participation of Iraq, Britain and the Soviet Union. The fair, which was not held in 1942 because of the War, was held between 1944-46 with the participation of Turkish firms only. In the post-war period, beginning in 1947, it became "international" again. Izmir International Fair preserves its traditional status of being a fair with the participation of over 30 countries, over 1400 local and foreign companies, and with around four million visitors. Izmir International Fair is a unique promotion and marketing mechanism, presenting an opportunity to reach nearly three million people from various income groups over a short period of 10 days. National "specialty fairs" have been held since 1976. Image overlay in color, high resolution. Izmir-Turkey.
