|The original Maelstrom is the Moskstraumen, a powerful tidal current between the Lofoten Point (Lofotodden) and the island Vaero/y south west of the main chain of the Lofoten Islands, off the Norwegian coast. It has its name from the small island Mosken in the middle of the sound.|
The Maelstrom is one of the strongest in the world.
The shallow strait, some 4-5 kilometres wide, lies between the island of Moskenes°ya and some islets off the island of Mosken, connects the Vestfjord and the northern part of the Norwegian Sea (north of Lofoten). The Moskstraumen forms twice a day when the tidal current changes direction, and has been measured with a speed of the water current of up to 27.7 km/h.
