Google Map of Tocks Island, Delaware River

Info Map Comments (0) Related Files

Tocks Island sits in the Delaware River slightly on the NJ side. The Delaware was supposed to be dammed to create a power source. The dam was supposed to run about 40 miles north to port Jervis, NY. Extreme opposition was given to the Army Corp of Engineering and the project was halted, but not before thousands of people were evicted from 'right of way' and their homes demolished. The land land was then given to the Parks Department who took another 20,000 acres, brining the total acquired acreage to about 40,000. More homes were demolished by the parks dept and only a few remain today, which are leased to former owners. Its a real catch-22, because people lost their homes. If they hadn't lost their homes tho, tho whole area would have turned into a huge tourist trap with condos/time shares, etc.
