Google Map of Lac (Lake) de Grand-Lieu

Info Map Comments (0) Related Files

The lake of Grand-Lieu, situated near the town of Nantes, West of France, is the largest lowland natural lake of France (more than 4000 ha, and 6300 ha in Winter). Difficult to access, it is largely included in a Natural Rserve managed by the S.N.P.N..
It is reknown for its wintering birds (particularly more than 80 Ruddy Ducks coming from England!), and for its flotting islets of willows where breed the largest French colonies of Grey Herons (Ardea cinerea), European Spoonbills (Platalea leucorodia) and White Egrets (Egretta alba). Recently, dozens of feral Sacred Ibis (Threskiornis aethiopicus) breed in mixed colonies with the Herons.
It's not an esay place to birdwatch, but from several points (Pierre-Aigüe, Saint-Lumine-de-Coutais, St-Philbert-de-Grand-Lieu and Passay), rareties have already been watched.
