The moveable, wing-like sun screen resting above the Milwaukee Art Museumís vaulted, glass-enclosed reception hall, the Burke Brise Soleil is the "...signature element of the Museumís new 142,050-square-foot Quadracci Pavilion," according to its website. The name is derived from French, "sun breaker". Its fins range in length from 26 to 105 feet. The Soleil, designed by internationally renowned architect Santiago Calatrava, is without precedent in American architecture. It features a wingspan of 217 feet at its widest, wider than that of the wings of a Boeing 747-400 aircraft, and weighing 90 tons.
