The Overlays are taken from NASA World Wind. Try this competition product by yourself. The resolution is mostly substantially worse than Google Earth and mostly in b/w, too. But you can use for the areas that not much featured in GE, but I guess that is only valid for USA. But one thing is great: NASA World Wind contains an relatively high resolution topographic map and one of the moon. But a least it is no really alternative solution by now.
