|Dating from the 13th century, the château de La Brède became property of Jacques de Secondat de Montesquieu around the end of the 17th century.|
Charles Louis de Secondat, baron de La Brède et de Montesquieu, also know as Montesquieu, was born in this Castle in 1689.
As of today, the castle has remained property of Montesquieu’s descendants.
The castle is of gothic style and is built on a small islet surrounded by a large water moat. The keep and the cylindrical towers are from the 13th century while the rest of the building along with the chapel are from the 15th century. Montesquieu had the park laid out such as those of British manors.
The buildings can be accessed by means of three bridges. Inside, the writer’s bedroom has been left unchanged
