This is the smallest, poorest and often neglected region in Bulgaria(which joins the EU in Jan 2007). Emplyoment here is the lowest in the country, as is the standard of living. But, also, this region is one of the most beautiful places on the Balkan Peninsula.
Main tourist attractions are:
The Baba Vida castle in Vidin; Vrachanski Balkan Nature Park and one of the most beautiful Bulgarian caves - "Ledenika" near Vratsa; Magura Cave, The Rabisha Lake, The Belogradchik fortress - all near Belogradchik, and of course the magnificent Danube River which flows near Vidin and Lom.
