Gospa od Skrpjela (church of Our Lady of the Rock), is actually a man-made island that took hundreds of years to complete. It is said that in 1452 an icon was found by fishermen from Perast on a rock in the Bay of Kotor. The icon began performing miracles, and they vowed to build a church dedicated to the icon on the spot it was found.

When sailors would return safely from a voyage, they would drop a rock into the bay. A couple hundred years later, with the help of the sinking of some captured ships loaded with rocks, an island popped up. The church was built in 1630 and the dome was added in 1725.

Inside the church, you can see the famous icon for which it was built and plenty of art by Tripo Kukolja, a famous local baroque artist from the early 1700's.

You can get to the island on a boat from Perast.
