Olduvai Gorge more precisely Oldupai Gorge (the correct Maasai name) in Tanzania is the site where early transitional human fossils (Homo habilis) were first discovered in 1960 by Louis and Mary Leakey in ancient lake sediment
The site contains evidence of at least three species of hominids such as Homo rudolfensis. and Australopithecus boisei. The few rudolfensis fossils date to about 2.4-1.9 million years ago, while the more common habilis remains are around 2.0-1.5 million years old.
