It was established in the 1950th. as a closed animal park for 70 Sika deers. 1969 Count Adam W. Knuth by a coinsidence got an offer of having wild animals in his park. At first he said no because it would be too expensive to make but as a animal trader in 1970 placed some wild animals in the park he saw the animals did feel nice in the. That was the start of the park.
The park has around 1000 animals from around the world.
You can also stay at the hostel located in one of the Knuthenborg manors. You can even try off road driving.
Every year more than 250000 people are visiting the park.
Next to the safari park is the railway station of Bandholm. From here you can take a ride to Maribo by steam train (sunday and thursday) and motortrain (saturday).
